What Is Laser Liposuction?

Traditional liposuction uses a metal tube to pull out fat out of a person’s body. However, laser liposuction, also called laser lipoplasty or laser lipolysis, is a fairly new method that uses heat to liquefy fat cells. The melted fat will then be absorbed through the patient’s lymphatic system, and any remaining fat will be suctioned out. Patients often see immediate results right after surgery, and laser liposuction is typically an outpatient procedure.

Because laser liposuction heats the fat to about 900 degrees, it can cause serious burn injuries. The tissues of the body absorb heat at different rates. Thus, the muscles, skin, and other tissues may suffer severe, third-degree burns during the procedure. These injuries can lead to infections and permanent scarring.

It is estimated that around 1% of all laser liposuction procedures result in complications. On the other hand, only about 0.3% of traditional liposuction procedures result in complications. Laser liposuction also requires revision surgery in 3.5-7% of patients. This means the patients must go back for repeated procedures.
