Pitocin and Birth Injuries in Atlanta
Labor is a natural process, and women have been giving birth to children for as long as our species has existed. There are times when the developments of modern medical science are useful or even necessary to assist or to alleviate difficulties in childbirth, but misuse of these tools and techniques can lead to serious complications and may cause harm to both the mother and child. We may be able to help you hold a doctor accountable for causing you or your baby to suffer birth injuries through negligence by filing a medical malpractice lawsuit. Come to The Tolson Firm, LLC to discuss the circumstances of the injury and to determine whether you have grounds for legal action. We have more than 30 years of combined legal experience, and an Atlanta medical malpractice lawyer from our team will represent you throughout the process of claiming the compensation you deserve.
Pitocin is a synthesized form of the naturally occurring hormone oxytocin, which is involved in causing the uterus to contract during labor. The drug is used to induce or accelerate labor, increasing the strength and frequency of contractions. It can be effective when properly used, but it is often applied in situations where the doctor is impatient to deliver the baby. Mothers are sometimes compelled to accept Pitocin without being informed of the negative aspects of an artificially induced labor.
Atlanta Pitocin Injury Claims
If Pitocin is used to induce or speed up a labor when the mother's body is not ready, the contractions can become exceedingly painful, necessitating an epidural. This makes it more difficult for the mother to continue active labor, as it numbs her from the waist down and makes it impossible to labor in anything but a supine position. The likelihood of a C-section is increased, which requires deep anesthetic and a longer healing process. The unnaturally increased strength of contractions may additionally reduce the blood supply to the baby, potentially resulting in fetal distress and hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) or even uterine rupture. If either you or your child suffered any type of birth injury during a Pitocin induced labor, you may have grounds for legal action.
